Central Corridor supporters fear MPR objections could derail LRT project
By Joe Kimball | Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008
Supporters of the Central Corridor light rail project say a new effort by Minnesota Public Radio to change its downtown St. Paul route could delay — or even derail — the nearly $1 billion effort to connect the Minneapolis and St. Paul downtowns.

Plans for the Central Corridor have been Approved!

The Central Corridor light-rail transit (LRT) project achieved another important milestone Feb. 27 when the Metropolitan Council approved the final scope of the 11-mile line linking downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul.

The Council action clears the way for the project staff and consultants to complete preliminary engineering on all components of the line.  The Council and its project partners face a deadline of early September to finish this work and apply for federal permission to enter final design in 2009. Downtown Alignment & Stations

CapitolRiver Council Position on the Downtown Alignment

Goal: Urge the Metropolitan Council to take the CCLRT project to the front of Union Depot

Statement:
Through a process co-sponsored by CRC and the St. Paul Planning Commission, downtown leaders spent great time and thought crafting the downtown portion of the Central Corridor Development Strategy. Based on the work, the St. Paul City Council adopted an officially preferred route for light rail downtown. That alignment brings light rail from
University Avenue, south on Robert Street, west on 12th Street, south on Cedar Street to 5th & Cedar, crossing the University Club block to 4th & Minnesota, and continuing eastward along 4th Street to a stop in front of Union Depot.

CRC strongly affirms its support for the light rail alignment outlined in the Central Corridor Development Strategy, and adopted by the St. Paul City Council. We urge the County, Metropolitan Council, and State and Federal governments, at minimum, to support and build the light rail route as laid out in the plan during the initial phase of light rail construction. We believe such a route is feasible within the federal cost effectiveness constraints, as it reduces the Cost Effectiveness Index (CEI) by 39 cents over the existing proposal in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Such a route is essential to solidify downtown St. Paul's long-term regional economic prospects.
